Making a Strum Stick Instrument

Stand Tall had the privilege of receiving Bern McLeod and Tracy Tomlinson from British Columbia at Stand Tall in March. Both are master craftsmen and musicians. The goal was to teach  10 children how to assemble a simple three string instrument, and also to provide the means to practice and perform music. They brought tools, jigs and kits for our 10 learners to assemble, and they filled our art room with a positive energy and creative spirit. The children made beautiful instruments and quickly caught on to playing simple tunes.

The excellent results coupled with the enthusiasm of the students has convinced us to seek out a part time music teacher that can come to Stand Tall and continue teaching our learners.
